Objective

*Provide an atomistic level understanding of adaptive oxide materials useful for neuromorphic computing.

*Understand the motion of ions as driven by electric fields, thermal gradients, light and current and how these forces effect measurable properties such as resistance, magnetic moment and optical properties.

*Establish the relationship between electrical conduction and the internal electronic state distributions as both experimentally measured and calculated from quantum mechanical theory.

*Extend existing quantum mechanical theory to include new descriptions of order to disorder transitions.

*Establish new benchmarks in low voltage, low power and temporal versatility in synaptic emulation materials and devices.

*Increase the dynamic range of synaptic emulation materials and devices so as to enable new applications currently not possible with single device implementations.

*Develop new circuits that leverage the unique advantages of the materials and devices being developed so as to enable rich forms of autonomous learning.
